Confessions #1

This is the first iteration in a weekly column I hope to have on here. So long as I can get my lazy ass to do it. If you think there is something I should be fessing up to drop me a line and let me know, and permitting it’s not about me it’s not about me being Le Renard Blanc, the world’s greatest international spy and art thief, then I’ll probably add it to the queue.

This one is a doozy. Just about anyone who could have told you about this have conveniently died in a gasoline fight accident. I’ve always been quite the videogamer, and for those who did not know me in high school I used to be able to afford my gaming fix by being a paid betatester for Microsoft, which funded my time running a Quake 2 clan all while neglecting my school work.

A common habit amongst ‘clan’ members was listening to music while playing. Preferably anything with an uptempo. Members often listened to Metallica, Iron Maiden, or some good old Reznor (he did do the score for the first game). I listened to… well I listened to… Aqua.

Yes… Aqua. That 90s Pop-Dance group that was jammed down our collective throats being sold as a Danish Abba. That very same pop group that brought us Barbie Girl, Candyman, Dr.Jones, and Turn Back Time. Yes I even remember it’s Lene, Rene, Claus and Soren… oh and I can’t forget C.A.N.D.Y. . This is also the group that brought needless cinemascope to music videos long before we started getting 16×9 TVs. So I am not even sure exactly what is worse. The fact that I listened to Aqua… a lot, or that I listened to it while playing Quake 2 on a daily basis. If you’re not familiar with Quake, it’s the gaming series that famously coined the term ‘giblet’, a blood limb thrown about by explosions and combat.

So what could I possibly to do to exacerbate this confession? Hmmm… I not only had both of their albums, but I think I may have purchased Aquarium(their first album) twice, after having the first one scratched from use. Perhaps the best thing (for my reputation) was their breakup in 2001. However Aqua has just put out a greatest hits album and has reformed and plans to create a third studio album. I’m still wrapping my head arounda greatest hits album when you have only produced two albums in the first place. Meanwhile they have a new single about the 80s that sounds very… ABBA.

OMG!!!

Well that was the first of many confessions to get off my chest. Now if you’ll excuse me, I feel like blowing things up while listening to Cartoon Heroes.
