I figured for the first official blog post I would speak about the look of Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. Now if you have not heard me say it yet, Public Enemies is my favorite movie of 2009 so far. When I first saw the trailer back in the earlier half of 2009 I thought “This is what I want Salvation to look like!”. Now Salvation TX is a screenplay I have been working for a long time and I am at a point now where I feel I may need to shoot a portion of it as a promotional tool.
My script is set in a post apocalyptic near future but at the same time is thematically a western. I wanted a consistency that could still be cinematic but a camera that could also take full advantage of night scenes with minimal lighting. Through the recommendations of friends I purchased a Sony PMW-EX1. Now the irony is that Mann and DOP Dante Spinotti considered shooting on film but opted to use the Sony F23 as their main camera with a little help from the PMW-EX1. So now I am getting the feeling I made a very wise decision…
For more information on the shooting of Public Enemies I highly recommend you check out the latest issue of American Cinematographer or simply check out the article online.
