The Megaman Rap

Here is yet another song based on a videogame that you’ll likely not be able to get out of your head for a week.

Thanks to my friend Enes who sent this to me last night. It is some form of videogame advert for bol.com which I’m guessing is a European Dell/Amazon type store. This is what happens when Singstar and the hideous Dragostea din tei by O-Zone meets Quake.

supervisor 510x317 Dont Vote for this Guy: He plays Halo

This little attack ad was produced by current Supervisor Fulton Brock who apparently is only two miracles away from Sainthood despite the fact he’s a Christian with an attack ad. The object of his distaste is 24 year old Ed Hermes who (OMG!!!) lives with his parents and (sweet Jesus!) is a

Skilled player of popular video game Halo. Hermes was quoted in the ASU student newspaper as saying:”I am addicted to ‘Halo’ and play almost every night.”

This can only mean he is a human killing machine with addiction to other substances as well. You know this guy’s time is up when he is using videogaming as a form of stigmata. We live in a world where it is socially normal to play videogames.

Funny how this man considers working with The Boy Scouts of America, a community organization that promotes grown men hanging out with little boys,  to be a good thing…

I think this is the first time videogaming has been used as a political smear.

If you have ever discussed Half-Life or rather videogame storytelling in general as being just as elaborate as say film, then I think you need to watch this. Sure they have lampooned movies in much the same, but when they have they usually just catch the one-liners and string it together. This however takes both games and hits just about every story point outside of the antlions.  Now if you take your average 2-hour movie and put it up against either game which happen to be much longer in length, I think it speaks volumes. It’s also funny.

I’m not even going to bother with a counterpoint again Soulja Boy’s review of a game intended for people who ’smoke weed and drink alcohol’. I feel bad for Game Designer Jonathan Blow when Soulja Boy has more money than any of us.

This video comes to me on a recommendation from Jon of Dads-Space. It also won the recent Jonathan Coulton competition at Machinima.com. So behold Bacteria by Kerrin. Now I have Wear Sunscreen stuck in my head…

braid1 thumb What Im Playing: Braid

These puzzles are so simple you will feel stupid afterwards.

I picked up Braid the day it was released on Xbox Live Arcade, with only a tiny bit of knowledge about it. I had heard some conversations via 1UP Yours and via the Indie Games Panels from a Game Developers Conference. I figured it was the usual pretentious indie design where you have beautiful artwork mixed with only somewhat interesting gameplay.

The art assets in Braid are phenomenal and to my surprise I can say the same about the story and gameplay. I’m sure you could play through this game without much thought given to its story but I think you’ll be missing out on one of Braid’s best qualities.

You’re a young man named Tim who has had his heart broken. Each of the worlds(modeled very similarly to Super Mario Bros) has it’s own quirk. As Tim you have the ability to rewind time. Unlike other platformers where you have limited lives, with Braid you simply rewind to when you were not dead. On just that level it eliminates a lot of frustration that comes with other games.

For you messageboard jerks, this is called an 'homage' to Donkey Kong.

As I was saying though each world has its own time-related quirk. One of which time only moves forward as you walk from left to right. It causes you to rewire your brain if you have any hope of beating these levels, and it’s not really about just finishing the levels. You’re primary motivation is to collect pieces of a puzzle that when reassembled resemble a happier time in Tim’s life. The artwork is just beautiful here as well. In another world you may have a ring that when dropped (using the Y button) will slow down time all around it like in some sort of time bubble. And somehow all of these mechanics lend well to the story.

I’m now on my third play-through and I am working up the nerve to get those coveted eight stars which will apparently change the ending of the game.  Some of which require a two hour wait to attain just one star.

Just go buy the game off Xbox Live and support artists like Jonathan Blow already.

I used to be a fan of the Red Alert series and Command & Conquer as well, but I am starting to feel they no longer ‘get the game’. Getting some from Jennifer McCarthy  is not a reward. It’s a punishment.

I figured my nemesis (yes, I know who you are) would appreciate this. I feel bad for the guy. I though the green buggers in Geometry Wars 2 were some of the easiest in this Xbox Live Arcade game.
